The United States flag underwent many renditions starting in the time of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Betsy Ross gets the credit for sewing the first rendition of the Stars and Stripes, 13 of each, and the stars were arranged in a circle in the blue “union” of the flag. The United States Flag that we know today went through over thirty changes as new states were added to the union, from 1777 to the final state of Hawaii in 1960.
Displaying the United States flag is a sign of patriotism and respect, requiring a set of guidelines for appropriate display of the flag in different locations and orientations. Check out our Flag Etiquette page for a complete guide to proper United States flag display options.
